...between
6 & 13 years old.
The first session is spent with parents only so parents may speak freely about their child's positive qualities and difficulties. At this first session, we will review paper work and discuss the client's strengths and stresses from the parents' perspective.
The second session is often spent with the child-only. Of course, we can modify this to best fit your needs. For example, some children do not want their parents to leave at their first session, & we can work with this!
Subsequent sessions may involve parents-only, parents and their child, or child-only with parent check-ins depending on what best fits the client's needs.
14 years old and up.
In PA, children who are 14 years old or older sign for their own mental health services. Therefore, your teen needs to be involved in the first session & want therapy services. The first half of the first session is spent together (parent & teen) to review paperwork, then I will spend the rest of the session meeting alone with the teen.
The second session is often spent with the parent only. Understanding the concerns from each perspective, and how I may be able to best help the client.

I am a seeking therapy for myself and I am...
...a Teen.
The first session is spent with you and your parent(s) at first to review paper work (service agreement, confidentiality etc.). Then, I spend the rest of the session with you without your parent (if you feel comfortable with this) to get to know you, what I can do to best help you, and for you to get to know me.
...an Adult.
We will spend the whole first session together going over paperwork and finding out what I can do to help you. This is also a great time for you to get to know me, and if you feel comfortable with my interpersonal and therapeutic style.
