Some people feel their
ADHD can be useful, and some people feel their ADHD can be debilitating.
You deserve to have a place that understands you.
Society doesn't often respond well to people with ADHD.
ADHD wasn't "really a thing" back when we were growing up.
You feel like you can't do life well.
Everything in life requires exective function skills. ADHD is related to difficulties with some exective functions. Therefore, ADHD can make life tasks harder -- but not impossible. Without appropriate supports, including therapy, it may be difficult for some adults with ADHD to show exactly what they are capable of.
Therapy
Once your child was diagnosed with ADHD, a lot of things started clicking for you.
Research shows that a child with ADHD is more likely to have a parent with ADHD. Studies estimate that a child with ADHD is anywhere from 2 to 8 times more likely to have a parent with ADHD, as compared to children without ADHD. (Kahn & Faraone, 2006). ADHD was less diagnosed when we were growing up, so sometimes an ADHD evaluation as an adult is required to determine if this diagnosis fits for you.
Therapy
You feel anxious around other people, frequently.
Society treats people with ADHD unjustly and unfairly. "Focus better." "Sit still." "Why aren't you trying?" "Make better choices." "Why do you need to argue so much?" "Calm down." "Get away from me." After years of this feedback from others, of course you'd assume you'll get negative feedback just from being around other people.
Therapy
You feel depressed, have poor self-worth, and feel hopeless about your future. And it feels like nothing ever changes.
When ADHD disrupts your ability to do life tasks, and multiple contexts in society continually give you negative feedback, you are bound to internalize those messages. "You're annoying." "You're flaky." "You're always late." "You don't care". "You can't do anything right." The thing that frustrates me the most is the fact that these messages aren't true of the person with ADHD, and therapy can help the person with ADHD re-define themselves in more accurate ways. Things can change - You can make them change even if you have tried and failed in the past.
