Evaluation Process
A childhood diagnosis is not required to meet criteria for ADHD in adulthood (Barkley, Murphy, & Fischer, 2007)
Adult ADHD diagnosis is based on evidence of ADHD-related impairments beginning in childhood, regardless of whether a diagnosis was previously made
Adult ADHD diagnoses are not determined by simply applying childhood symptom criteria to adult functioning
Accurate diagnosis requires developmentally informed clinical judgment. Our expertise in childhood ADHD supports this approach
Performance on computerized attention tasks does not reflect how attention difficulties present in everyday adult life (Barkley, 2019)
Consistent with current research and best practices, we do not use computerized attention tasks in our evaluations

Autism in girls can often be overlooked
Girls with autism often show more subtle social difficulties, develop strong skills of assimilation, and may have special interests that look more socially typical (animals, celebrities, books) rather than the stereotypical interests associated with autism. As a result, many women reach adulthood — sometimes after a lifetime of anxiety, depression, or feeling "different" — before ever being properly evaluated
High Intelligence can lead to delayed concerns about Autism
In childhood, folks with Autism can develop compensatory strategies that help them succeed in school, while struggling significantly with social relationships, sensory sensitivities, or executive functioning. Because these children aren't behind academically, their differences can be interpreted as quirkiness, giftedness, or introversion rather than explored as autism...

What if there were no developmental delays?
A person meeting their developmental milestones does not rule out Autism. Symptoms of Autism can be subtle or interpreted as personality differences rather than developmental ones
